Girls Camp Hard-Won Observations

In meeting with the leaders after the last several Girls Camps, there was a strong consensus that there are a handful of things, which need to be considered for a successful Girls Camp.

Girls Camp Keys to Success

#1. Pacing

This is the most important consideration to a successful Girls Camp.   If there are not enough things to do, trust me, some of the young women will come up with something.  It may not be at all what you intend, but they’ll come up with something.  They will also be bored out of their minds. Not a good plan.  On the other hand, if camp is too rushed, with not enough down time, they will be exhausted and not able to enjoy themselves.  Also not a good plan.  Without exception, the leaders concluded it was most important to aim for a balanced, fun schedule with enough activities to be interesting and enough down time to be spiritual, relax and reflect. You’ll want at least a couple hours of down time scheduled through out the day for this. Speaking of pacing, it’s also important to have enough time between the activities to change venues without making it a marathon.

#2. Flexibility

At one of our best camps we had a lake activity scheduled for early afternoon on Day 1 and candle making scheduled for the later afternoon.  However, once the 17 young women got settled in at the lake, they really didn’t want to leave. We ended up not doing our afternoon candle making activity.  One of the keys to a successful camp experience is that the young women get to enjoy themselves.  Our choices were: 1) continue having a ball at the lake swimming, boating and bonding or 2) go back to the hot cabin and make candles and paper.  Hm, that ‘s certainly a tough decision.  Not.  NOTE: If we would have had more than one group of 17 girls, we would have stuck to the schedule.  But with only one small group, we could be flexible  – and we were.

#3. Food

You can’t have a great girls camp without great food.  Trust me, you just can’t.  I’ve included my entire large group camp menu with links to all of the recipes below.  You’ll love them.

Huli Huli Chicken

This is without a doubt one of the Best. Chicken. Recipes. Ever. We fixed this for our luau last year. I figured out of the 140 guests there had to be some folks who didn't like roast pig. So we made 70 pieces of Huli Huli Chicken to supplement the roast pig. Turns out no one doesn't like roast pig. But NO ONE wanted to skip the chicken either.

Heath Bar Freezer Pie

In less then 15 minutes you can have this yummy Heath Bar Freezer Pie done and in the freezer. Make it before you need it. Need a quick dessert? Ta da! You have a Frozen Heather Bar Cream Pie in the freezer. Your family will love it!

Mexican Street Corn Casserole

Mexican Street Corn Casserole is loaded with flavor. A real family pleaser. You can serve it as a side dish, or a dip. You can even use it in tacos. Enjoy!
