Way Cool, Unique Things to Do on the Big Island of Hawaii

Given the size of the Big Island and the varied climates it enjoys, it’s not surprising there is such a wide selection of exciting and interesting activities available. These range from very specialized options such as night scuba dives with our local bioluminescent critters (a once-in-a-lifetime treat we can’t wait to do) to more general options, such as sampling the amazing bounty of local produce and foods at one of the local the Farmers Markets (we especially like the Hawi (pron. Ha-vee) Farmers Market, whose location is simply listed as ‘under the banyan tree by the post office’).

Want to try surfing, stand-up paddle boarding & boogie boarding (two of MY favorites), snow boarding, hiking, snorkeling, wild pig hunting, shopping, finding those hidden gem local art galleries, taking a sunset catamaran ride, watching the annual whale migration, taking a magic-carpet ride in a helicopter, touring magnificent botanical gardens, zip riding, mountain biking through a tropical rainforest, swimming at one of the World’s Top Ten beaches, climbing a volcano, walking through a lava tube, horseback riding on one of the largest cattle ranches in the world, and star gazing under crystal clear skies? The Big Island’s got it covered. It’s also one of the few places on Earth where you can walk barefoot on white, green or black sand beaches, scuba dive with Manta Rays and watch creation unfold as molten lava boils into the sea. How can you not love a place like that?
